Each time, we embarked on the same full-day tour with RealNZ, and both experiences were equally magical. The journey begins with a scenic cruise across Lake Manapouri, followed by a spectacular bus ride over Wilmot Pass, leading to the highlight of the day, a four-hour boat trip through Doubtful Sound, all the way to the Tasman Sea and back. This remote wilderness, untouched and majestic, did not fail to leave us in awe.

Doubtful Sound is often called the ‘Sound of Silence,’ and for good reason. Its vast fjords, dramatic cliffs, and countless waterfalls create an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. Unlike Milford Sound, which though stunning, can be busy with tourists, Doubtful Sound offers a rare sense of solitude, making the experience even more immersive and special.

Both times, we were mesmerized by the ever-changing weather. Sometimes shrouded in mist, sometimes bathed in sunlight, each condition adding a unique character to the landscape. We spotted playful dolphins, watched fur seals basking on rocky outcrops, and even glimpsed the occasional rare Fiordland crested penguin.
