Australia

“Australia; a journey to vast horizons, ancient whispers, and the endless discovery of yourself.”

Australia

Of course, it was bound to happen eventually. At the end of 2022, it finally did, we travelled to Australia for the first time, flying in from Bali. Visiting the Land Down Under to discover Australia had always been part of our long-term travel dream. Just before Christmas, we were offered the opportunity to house-sit in Melbourne for an extended period, and we said yes without hesitation.

We spent two incredible months living like locals in Melbourne. During that time, we embarked on a camping road trip along the Great Ocean Road, and Geert had the unforgettable experience of attending the Australian Open in person. After three months in New Zealand, we returned to Australia to spend the winter (European summer), road-tripping up the east coast from Melbourne to Cairns in a car with a rooftop tent. On the way back, we crossed through the interior and the legendary Outback, embracing Australia’s vastness and striking diversity.

At the end of 2023, following another three-month stay in New Zealand, we returned to Melbourne for a second house-sit. The city welcomed us back like an old friend, and we were able to further strengthen our bond with Ellen and Han, hosts who became true friends.

Early 2024, we set off on another road trip to discover Australia more deeply. This time, we started with nearly a month in Tasmania, then crossed the expansive Nullarbor Plain, 1,200 kilometers of breathtaking emptiness, on our way to Western Australia. There, we completed two house-sits in Perth, where Geert prepared for his trekking in the Himalayas scheduled for April and May.

And now? When 2025 is on its way, we found ourselves back in Melbourne once again. Who would have thought? Australia, with its powerful nature, free spirit, and open-hearted people, has captured our imagination. We simply cannot stay away.

Discover Australia, a country that feels more like a continent, bursting with contrasts, adventures, and soul-stirring beauty. It is a place where every journey feels like an epic, and every destination tells a different story.

Whether you are planning a short trip or an extended stay, Australia invites you to take your time. With its massive size, 185 times larger than the Netherlands, there truly is no such thing as a quick visit. You need space, time, and curiosity to truly discover Australia.

For first-time visitors, we recommend setting aside at least three weeks. If you have more time, even better. Australia rewards a relaxed pace. From vibrant cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth to natural wonders like Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Daintree Rainforest, every region has something unique to offer.

Some of our personal highlights include: Road-tripping along the Great Ocean Road, Camping in the remote Red Centre, Discovering the raw beauty of Tasmania, Crossing the Nullarbor Plain or Enjoying the coastlines from Byron Bay to Cairns.

Craving adventure? Dive with sharks in Port Lincoln, hike ancient forests in the Blue Mountains, or sleep under the stars in Karlu Karlu. Prefer a slower rhythm? Sip coffee in Melbourne’s laneways, sample wines in Barossa Valley, or sink your feet into the powdery sands of Whitehaven Beach.

Despite its size, Australia is easy to travel. The Australian dollar (AUD) is the local currency, English is the main language (with a charming twist), and public infrastructure is reliable. Distances can be long, but the journey is part of the magic. Climate-wise, keep in mind: summer in the south is winter in the north, so plan your route accordingly.

Whether you are chasing kangaroos, surfing iconic waves, crossing the desert, or soaking in city life, Australia offers it all.
