“La Palma: Stunning Landscapes Meet Tranquil Charm on La Isla Bonita”
La Palma
From January 4 to March 15, 2021, we spent ten unforgettable weeks discovering the Canary Island of La Palma. As part of our plan to escape the European winter, the Canary Islands were an obvious choice, safe, mild, and filled with natural beauty. After visiting La Gomera, we arrived on La Palma by ferry and immediately felt the island’s unique energy.
La Palma is often overshadowed by its more touristy neighbours, but that is exactly what makes it special. It offers tranquillity, unspoiled landscapes, and a deep sense of authenticity. Our first base was a cosy apartment in Breña Baja on the east coast, where we explored lush forests, black sand beaches, and quiet local towns.
In our second week, we stayed in Tijarafe, a charming village on the sunnier west coast. At 600 metres above sea level, we found ourselves surrounded by dramatic views, fresh mountain air, and unforgettable walks. One of our favourite hikes led to Los Tilos, a misty laurel forest with a beautiful waterfall. We also visited Poris de Puntagorda and Poris de Candelaria, hidden coves that felt like secrets shared by nature itself.
The heart of our stay unfolded in Las Indias, on the peaceful southwest coast. There, we found our long-term accommodation: Balcón Atlántico, a spacious apartment with an ocean-facing terrace that gifted us with stunning sunsets every evening. Initially booked for four weeks, we extended to eight. That says it all.
From Las Indias, we explored the island at a relaxed pace. We visited the San Antonio and Teneguía volcanoes, the Fuencaliente lighthouse, and the beaches of Zamora and Puerto Naos. Every drive across the island felt like a mini road trip through changing climates and landscapes.
La Palma impressed us deeply with its mix of rugged volcanic terrain, lush green valleys, and peaceful coastal stretches. Winter days were mild along the coast, with cooler evenings at higher altitudes—ideal for nature lovers seeking balance and variety. And the people? Warm, welcoming, and proud of their island. From the start, we felt at home.
La Palma is more than a destination, it is a feeling we carry with us. And yes, we will be back.
