What is it like to travel through Mexico for seven unforgettable weeks? On this page, we share our personal experiences, stories, and tips from our 2021 journey, from the Yucatan Peninsula to Mexico City, Puebla, and Oaxaca.
In the summer of 2021, the world slowly began to reopen. The Covid pandemic was not over, but traveling became possible again. After nearly a year of exploring Europe with our campervan, we felt ready for a new continent, and a new adventure! In October 2021, we set off to discover Mexico. At that time, it was one of the most accessible countries outside of Europe. We stayed for almost two months, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding travel experiences we have ever had.
We began our journey in the Yucatan Peninsula. After a few days in Cancun, we rented a car and followed a stunning route through Valladolid, Merida, and Uxmal, eventually reaching Bacalar via Coba and Mahahual. We even returned to Valladolid, we loved it so much, and visited the incredible Ek Balam.
From Cancun, we flew to Mexico City. To our surprise, the capital may have impressed us even more than Yucatan. We stayed for nine days and loved every moment. Afterwards, we continued by bus to Puebla and Oaxaca, two cities full of charm, culture, and history.

Discover Mexico, a country that continues to surprise, inspire, and delight at every turn. During our seven-week journey, we explored ancient cities, colonial streets, turquoise lakes, and vibrant markets. With every stop, Mexico opened up a little more, revealing its colour, warmth, and unexpected calm.
We began in the Yucatan Peninsula, where the air is humid, the colours rich, and the pace perfect for slow travel. After a few days in Cancun where we made a daytrip to Isla Mujeres, we set off in a rental car for a loop through the region. Our first stop was Valladolid, a charming cozy colonial town with colourful facades, relaxed plazas, and one of the world’s greatest wonders just down the road: Chichen Itza. Arrive really early, before the crowds and the heat, and you can feel the ancient grandeur that still lingers in the stone.
From Valladolid, we continued to Merida via the small town of Izamal. the cultural heart of the region, where colonial architecture meets local rhythm and late-night street food. During our trip through the Yucatan we visited a few cenotes, go for the remote and quiet ones.
Nearby Marida, the Mayan ruins of Uxmal stunned us with their elegance and tranquility. The further south we went, the quieter it got. We passed through Coba and visited another ruin site and stayed overnight in the laidback coastal town of Mahahual. Eventually reaching the freshwater lagoon of Bacalar, a place so peaceful, we stayed longer than planned. Kayaking on the Laguna de Bonanza was one of the most brilliant experiences of our trip. On our way back to Cancún, we could not resist returning to Valladolid, this time to visit Ek Balam, a lesser-known but deeply impressive Mayan site surrounded by jungle.
Next, we flew to Mexico City, and what a city it is. We had expected something big and busy, but what we found was balance, character, beauty and the best street food. We wandered through the parks of Coyoacan, admired murals in Palacio de Bellas Artes, browsed books in the stunning Biblioteca Vasconcelos, visited the house and museum of Frieda Kahlo and so much more. The street food was spectacular, the people were super friendly, and the city had a rhythm that drew us in.
From there, we continued by bus to Puebla, with its colourful tiles, volcano views, and baroque churches. And finally, we arrived in Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s cultural powerhouses. The markets here are unforgettable, the cuisine is world-famous, and the city’s atmosphere is vibrant, artistic, and grounded in tradition.
Mexico is a country of contrasts, ancient and modern, bustling and peaceful, familiar and unknown. Whether you are wandering through Maya ruins, strolling city streets, or floating on a turquoise lagoon, Mexico has a way of making you feel welcome and alive.
