“New Zealand: Where Breathtaking Nature Meets Ultimate Relaxation”

Our 7-Month Journey: Why We Love to Travel to New Zealand

In late 2018, we visited New Zealand for the very first time. Reflecting on that trip now, we can confidently say we made a classic “beginner’s mistake.” In just four weeks, we ambitiously set out to explore both the North and South Islands. Starting in Auckland, we drove across the North Island, crossed the Cook Strait, and eventually made our way back via the same route.

Learning from Our First Road Trip

Was it doable? Absolutely, we did it! However, with the knowledge and experience we have now, it is not something we would recommend. It was a whirlwind of long drives and packed schedules, leaving little time to truly soak in the beauty of the country. But one thing was certain: New Zealand had captured our hearts. We knew we would return to explore it more slowly, savoring every moment.

Embracing Slow Travel in 2023

Fast forward to 2023, and that dream became a reality. After the pandemic, New Zealand reopened its doors, and we embraced the opportunity to immerse ourselves in its breathtaking beauty, not once, but twice! From January to April 2023, we embarked on a three-month journey across the country in a campervan we purchased near Auckland. While a cyclone made much of the North Island inaccessible, we took our time touring the South Island, marveling at its dramatic landscapes. In September 2023, we returned for another three-month adventure, this time focusing on the North Island. Altogether, we spent seven months traveling across New Zealand. On this page, we share our experiences and lessons for anyone planning to travel to New Zealand, whether for a short trip or a slow travel journey.

Plan Your Visit: Essential Tips for New Zealand

New Zealand is an extraordinary destination that deserves a place on every traveler’s wish list. In fact, it is definitely one of our favorite countries. Whether you are visiting for a few weeks or planning an extended stay, this breathtaking country offers endless opportunities to explore and unwind.

Must-Visit Destinations & Activities

For first-time visitors, we recommend spending at least three weeks and pick either North Island or South Island to truly appreciate the beauty. If you can stay longer, even better! With extra time, you can discover hidden gems across both islands. Highlights include:

  • The South Island: Dramatic fjords like Doubtful Sound and the golden beaches of Abel Tasman.
  • The North Island: Geothermal wonders in Rotorua and the vibrant city of Auckland.
  • Adventure: Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or go whale watching in Kaikoura.
  • Relaxation: Enjoy world-class wineries in Marlborough or hot pools in Hanmer Springs.
