Shanghai
“Shanghai moves so fast, if you blink, the skyline changes, and somehow, the soul keeps up.”
Shanghai
The autumn of 2024 was all about our grand Asia tour. Japan and South Korea were already on our wish list, but we deliberately left room for surprises. And then came one of the most exciting ones: since late 2023, citizens of the Netherlands (and many other nationalities) can travel to China visa-free for up to 15 days.
So when we booked our flights to Asia, a stopover in Shanghai suddenly made perfect sense!
We made the decision quickly. Before heading to Japan, we spent four days in Shanghai, making the most of three full days in the city. We already knew that Shanghai is considered China’s most western and accessible metropolis, but still, it managed to surprise and amaze us in every way.
Shanghai is fast, modern, and relentlessly innovative. Yet at the same time, its deep-rooted history is visible all around you. The city is easy to navigate, with bilingual signage, a user-friendly metro system, and locals who speak a fair amount of English. It is futuristic and traditional, efficient and expressive, all at once. Despite the speed of life here, Shanghai never feels impersonal. In fact, it was our first real taste of China, and it left us wanting much more.
Thanks to the current visa policy, traveling to China has become surprisingly simple. And make no mistake: China is far ahead in many ways, from infrastructure to tech. On this page, we share all our tips and insights to help you discover Shanghai, and travel China with confidence.
There is more to come, this was just the beginning.

Discover Shanghai, where centuries-old culture meets dazzling modern skylines. With just three days in the city, we managed to experience its contrasts, energy, and unexpected calm. Whether you are after architecture, street life, skyline views, or quiet historical corners, Shanghai has it all, and more.
We started with Nanjing Road, one of the most famous shopping streets in the world. It is busy, bright, and buzzing from morning until night. A walk here gives you a glimpse of the city’s fast pace, and how locals mix shopping, business, and leisure into one flow.
From there, we made our way to The Bund, both enjoyed in the daytime and at night when the skyline across the river shines through the haze and is lit up at night. We took the ferry across the Huangpu River, a simple but surprisingly beautiful way to see the skyline unfold. It may only take minutes, but it is a moment you will remember.
On the other side: Lujiazui, home to the Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and Shanghai World Financial Center. Visit Shanghai Tower at sunset and stay through the evening. The view transforms from golden to neon, and you feel like you are watching the future happen in real time.
But Shanghai is not just steel and glass. We wandered through the French Concession, where tree-lined streets and art deco buildings tell a quieter story of the city. In the Old City, we found temples, markets, and the kind of layered history that defines old China.
And some of the best moments? Simply getting lost. Walking without a plan, stepping into side streets, stopping for noodles, and watching daily life unfold. Shanghai is a city best discovered by doing exactly that.
Discover Shanghai your own way, and let the city surprise you.
