South Korea
“South Korea hits you like a shot of soju—bold, unapologetic, and electrifying. Street food sizzles, neon pulses, and tradition and futurism collide in perfect chaos.”
South Korea
After visiting Japan in late summer 2024, South Korea was next on our list. Since the two countries are relatively close, it made perfect sense to continue our journey there. At the time, South Korea was very easy to travel through, and while that still holds true, the situation became slightly more unsettled toward the end of the year. If you are planning a trip, we recommend checking the latest travel updates before you go.
We took the ferry from Fukuoka in Japan across to Busan, yes, by boat, and spent just over three weeks in South Korea. Of course, that is not nearly enough to see everything, but we planned a route that focused on the places that intrigued us most. We explored Busan and Seoul, and even managed to visit Jeju Island twice.
One of the highlights of our time in South Korea was housesitting on Jeju Island, split into two separate stays. In between, we travelled to Seoul, which gave us the chance to experience the capital city in depth and get a feel for its rhythm and contrasts.
It was a great itinerary, yet we know there is still so much more to explore. South Korea surprised and inspired us, and it is a place we would love to return to. If you are curious, read on to Discover South Korea with us.

Discover South Korea, a country where ancient traditions meet modern innovation, and where every region offers something uniquely beautiful. From high-tech cities and royal palaces to coastal towns and volcanic islands, South Korea is a destination full of contrasts, culture, and discovery. It is less travelled than some of its neighbours, yet it rewards every visitor with depth, flavour, and energy.
At the heart of the country lies Seoul, a city that never sleeps and never stops evolving. As South Korea’s capital, Seoul is a place where historic palaces stand beside modern skyscrapers, and traditional markets are just a few steps from luxury department stores. Walk through the grand gates of Gyeongbokgung Palace, try local delicacies at the street food stalls of Myeongdong, or take in the panoramic city views from Seoul Tower. The atmosphere is lively, layered, and full of life.
Further south, Busan offers a refreshing change of pace. This coastal city is known for its beaches, colourful neighbourhoods, and excellent seafood. Spend an afternoon at Haeundae Beach, stroll through the Gamcheon Culture Village with its pastel-painted houses, or visit Jagalchi Market, where the catch of the day is served fresh and fast. The energy here is slower, warmer, and deeply connected to the sea.
Off the southern coast lies Jeju Island, a tropical escape within South Korea. With its volcanic peaks, lava tubes, and scenic coastlines, Jeju feels like a world of its own. Hike up Hallasan, the tallest mountain in South Korea, explore dramatic caves, or unwind along the beaches near Seogwipo. The island’s peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty make it a destination you will not want to leave.
Whether you are wandering through neon-lit Seoul, feeling the sea breeze in Busan, or hiking across Jeju’s volcanic terrain, South Korea offers a travel experience that is rich, varied, and unforgettable.
