Tasmania
“A wild and untamed land, where the edge of the world meets boundless discovery.”
Tasmania
What would a long stay in Australia be without a road trip to discover Tasmania? And so, we set off for over three weeks to explore this incredible island by car and bike.
In February 2024, we took the ferry from Geelong (about an hour from Melbourne) to Devonport, on Tasmania’s north coast. But don’t be fooled, this is no short crossing. The Bass Strait can be rough, and during the 10-hour voyage, the seas can get quite wild. Once we arrived, we explored the island in our comfortable car, stayed in cozy accommodations, and brought our bikes along, giving us the freedom to discover Tasmania at our own pace.
Our route? A clockwise loop around Tasmania. From Devonport, we followed the stunning north coast, stopping at Smithton, Penguin, and Low Head. Via the charming town of Sheffield and the lively city of Launceston, we reached the east coast, where we slowly made our way south. Passing through Hobart and Bruny Island, we traveled to the southernmost tip of the island. On our way west, we visited the impressive Gordon Dam and the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, before reaching the remote west coast. We wrapped up our journey with a visit to the iconic Cradle Mountain, located in the breathtaking Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park.
Tasmania has everything, from rugged mountains to pristine beaches, from charming villages to vast wilderness. Four seasons in one day and countless landscapes to explore. Picturesque towns, stunning bays, towering mountain ranges, and untouched nature. And the people? Super friendly and always up for a chat.
On this page, we will take you along on our Tasmanian adventure. Get inspired by our route, experiences, and tips, and discover Tasmania. Should you have any questions? You know where to find us!

For first-time visitors, we recommend spending at least three weeks to discover Tasmania to truly appreciate its beauty. If you can stay longer, even better, how about the entire summer! With extra time, you can travel at a relaxed pace, embrace the diverse landscapes, and uncover the island’s hidden gems. Highlights include the pristine beaches of Wineglass Bay, the rugged mountains of Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park, and the dramatic cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula.
Tasmania is best explored by road, allowing you to discover its most scenic spots at your own pace. We started our adventure by taking the ferry from Geelong to Devonport, on the island’s north coast. From here, our clockwise loop around the island began.
Visit the charming northern coastal towns of Smithton, Penguin, and Low Head, where we soaked in Tasmania’s maritime heritage and stunning ocean views. We then traveled inland, passing through Sheffield, the town of murals, before arriving in Launceston, home to the breathtaking Cataract Gorge.
Continuing to the east coast, we explored Wineglass Bay, one of the most spectacular beaches in the world, located within Freycinet National Park. With its crystal-clear waters and white sandy shores, it is the perfect place to hike, kayak, or simply relax. Further south, Port Arthur provided a deep dive into Tasmania’s past, with its haunting yet fascinating convict history. From there, we traveled to Hobart, Tasmania’s lively capital, known for its Salamanca Market, Mount Wellington, and vibrant arts scene. A short ferry ride took us to Bruny Island, where we indulged in local cheese and stunning coastal walks.
Heading west, we explored the untouched beauty of Gordon Dam and Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, before reaching Tasmania’s remote west coast, a place of rugged landscapes, towering sand dunes, and untamed wilderness. We wrapped up our adventure with a visit to the iconic Cradle Mountain, one of Tasmania’s most famous landmarks, surrounded by alpine lakes and breathtaking hiking trails. And we finnaly met the Tasmanian Devil, in a sanctuary because meeting them in the wild is very rare.
Looking for adventure? Hike to the summit of Cradle Mountain, explore the lavender fields of Bridestowe Estate, or take a cruise through the dramatic gorges of the Gordon River. Prefer a more relaxed experience? Wander through charming towns, sample world-class wines, or simply enjoy a peaceful afternoon in one of Tasmania’s stunning national parks. Tasmania is easy to travel, with well-maintained roads, friendly locals, and plenty of incredible stops along the way. The island experiences four seasons in one day, so pack accordingly!
